Serums 101

Serums are now available on every shelf of the skincare aisle in every grocery store and pharmacy. And they’re there for a good reason! Serums offer concentrated doses of potent active ingredients to give you glowing, gorgeous skin and target problem areas with powerful results. Serums have a thinner viscosity than moisturizers and creams, allowing for fast absorption; layering your face creams and moisturizers after applying a serum lock is the good stuff.

Anti-Aging Serums

If you are looking for the fountain of youth, you will want a serum with retinol or bakuchiol as the active ingredient. These ingredients encourage cell repair and collagen production.

Skin-Brightening Serums

Skin brightening serums contain vitamin C, glycolic acid, ferulic acid, kojic acid, mushroom, plant extracts, or lactic acid. Be careful when using acids at a dilution higher than 2%, as they can cause irritation, peeling, and redness. Start using these every few days and work your way up to daily if your skin tolerates the serum well.

Hydrating Serums

Hydrating serums often contain hyaluronic acid, a chemical that makes skin look plump and feel firm. As you age, your skin loses collagen and elasticity and stops producing as much hyaluronic acid naturally. Make sure that you are staying hydrated when using these serums. If you are dehydrated, hyaluronic acid may leave your skin dry and flaky.

Antioxidant Serums

Antioxidants combat free radicals that your skin comes in contact with every single day due to environmental pollutants. Free radicals damage healthy cells. Ingredients like vitamins A, C, and E have potent antioxidant properties and can protect your skin.

Acne and Sensitive Skin Serums

Salicylic acid and niacinamides soothe and hydrate the skin with anti-inflammatory properties. These ingredients can minimize redness and irritation.

Texture-Smoothing Serums

Glycolic acid will be your go-to when it comes to resurfacing and texture-smoothing. This acid penetrates deep into the epidermis to stimulate cell turnover. Glycolic serums promote shedding, and your skin will peel. This peeling is normal and reveals smoother skin.
