Pilates

Pilates is a whole-body exercise practice that emphasizes improving core strength. The exercises join the movement with breath work to focus on and strengthen smaller muscles groups. Pilates is low-impact and gentle on the joints while providing a challenge that builds lean muscle, balance, and flexibility.

Mat Classes

Pilates can be done with very little equipment. A pilates mat is slightly thicker than a yoga mat, offering more cushion to pressure points. You can find classes in your local gym or fitness center. Equipment you may encounter in a Pilates class includes resistance bands, The Magic Circle (another resistance tool), and a few specialized chairs that classes usually provide.

Reformer Classes

Reformer classes use reformer machines that have a sliding platform with a stationary foot bar, springs, and pulleys for resistance exercises. Reformer classes can be more challenging. Having a solid yoga practice can make reformer classes easier to keep up with.

Private Lessons

Beginners may want to take a few private lessons before joining a class. In private lessons, you can learn the basics and familiarize yourself with the equipment used. You will learn how to perform the exercises safely and in proper form.

Beginner’s Classes

Beginner’s classes often follow the same exercises through each class. Following the same movements may seem tedious, but these classes help you build the foundation for more advanced classes.

Gearing Up

Pilates workout gear should be body-hugging. Loose clothing can impede the instructor’s ability to watch your body movements and correct your form. Loose clothing can also be a safety hazard when it comes to reformer machines and other equipment.

Smaller Classes

Pilates is best done with smaller class sizes. This ensures that an instructor can offer attention to each class participant and correct form as necessary.

Silence Is Golden

You won’t hear any music blasting from a pilates studio. Pilates is done in relative silence. The instructor will give guidance, explain exercises and tell you when and how to breathe.
